The river is our lifeblood: Yapei residents alarmed over Black Volta pollution

The Black Volta River, a crucial water source near Yapei, has been severely polluted due to illegal mining (galamsey) activities in the Banda Nkwanta area.

The contamination poses a serious threat to the health and livelihoods of local residents, many of whom rely on the river for drinking water, fishing, and other economic activities. The pollution has sparked widespread concern within the community, with residents urging authorities to act swiftly.

“The river is our lifeblood, and we cannot afford to lose it,” a resident lamented. “We are appealing to the government to take action and protect our river.”

The Black Volta, which eventually merges with the White Volta to form the Volta River, is an essential waterway for both human consumption and environmental sustainability. However, ongoing illegal mining has led to widespread destruction and contamination, further endangering the ecosystem.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources has assured the public that steps are being taken to combat illegal mining, vowing to hold those responsible accountable. Meanwhile, affected communities continue to call for urgent intervention to safeguard their water source before the damage becomes irreversible.
