John Mahama calls for increased US support to tackle West Africa’s security challenges at Munich Security Conference

President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater U.S. support in addressing security threats in the West African sub-region.

During bilateral talks with the Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM), General Michael E. Langley, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Mahama emphasized the need for enhanced security cooperation and logistical support for the Ghana Armed Forces.

“Today’s meeting with General Langley highlights Ghana’s commitment to enhancing our security posture in response to evolving threats across the region. We appreciate the support of the United States and are keen to expand our collaborative efforts,” Mahama stated.

The discussions focused on strengthening coordination between Ghana and the U.S. to combat terrorism, extremism, and regional conflicts that threaten stability. Additionally, both leaders explored the establishment of a bilateral agreement for joint maritime patrols to protect Ghana’s coastal waters from illegal fishing and piracy.

Beyond security, Mahama also engaged in talks on attracting foreign investment to Ghana, stressing the need to create a stable environment conducive to economic growth.
