Ghana will join other countries and education stakeholders to address the challenges faced by children when conflict, flooding or pandemics disrupt schooling as Accra hosts West Africa’s second High-Level Conference on Scaling Education Initiatives in Emergencies from September 29–30, 2026.
The conference will bring together education leaders, researchers, innovators, financiers, academics and development partners to examine practical solutions for ensuring that children continue learning when emergencies disrupt normal schooling.

Speaking ahead of the conference today, the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, pointed to Ghana’s experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Akosombo Dam spillage and conflicts such as those affecting Bawku.
According to him, these emergencies have demonstrated how crises can displace learners, disrupt teaching and learning, and damage educational infrastructure.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu called for successful interventions to be scaled beyond pilot projects, stronger financing mechanisms for education in emergencies, and greater regional cooperation.
