The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has called on the government to increase investment in irrigation facilities in Northern Ghana to boost agricultural production and support economic growth.
According to PFAG, Northern Ghana has vast fertile lands with the potential to transform the country’s economy if existing irrigation systems are rehabilitated and new water sources are developed to support year-round farming.

The Executive Director of PFAG, Dr Charles Kwowe Nyaaba, made the call during an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Kayoro in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, on the sidelines of a sorghum farmers awards ceremony organised by the association.
He said improved irrigation infrastructure would encourage more people, especially the youth, to engage in agriculture, while helping to reduce poverty, unemployment and rural-urban migration.
Dr Nyaaba stressed that relying mainly on rainfall for farming exposed farmers to production challenges due to changing weather patterns. Stakeholders have also highlighted that irrigation development could help farmers overcome crop failure risks caused by uncertain rainfall distribution.
He urged the government to adopt strategic measures to expand access to irrigation, which he described as essential for achieving food security and sustainable agricultural development in Ghana.
