The government has announced plans to refer a broadcast by Onua TV, which alleged that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was involved in illegal mining activities, to the National Media Commission (NMC).
In a statement signed by Deputy Minister of Information Fatimatu Abubakar, the government described the publication by broadcaster Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, as unethical and aimed at damaging the reputation of the President and undermining his commitment to fighting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The government rejected the claims, stating that President Akufo-Addo had never been involved in galamsey.
“The content propagated in the video is false, malicious and without basis. It is nothing but an act of unethical and irresponsible journalism,” the statement said.
It added that the broadcast was intended to create public disaffection against the government and weaken efforts to combat illegal mining in the country.
The government said the referral to the NMC would not prevent it from pursuing further legal action against Captain Smart, Onua TV, and Media General if necessary.
It expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and disinformation under the guise of journalistic freedom, stressing the need for responsible media practice.
The government also urged Media General, the parent company of Onua TV, to maintain professional standards by ensuring proper verification of information and avoiding speculation in news presentation.
