International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF)

Ghana and the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) have signed a three-year cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening French language education through a teacher mobility programme.

The agreement, which runs from 2021 to 2024, is part of the implementation of the Linguistic Pact signed between Ghana and the OIF in 2018 to build the capacity of French teachers and promote the use of French in the country.

The agreement was signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, Benjamin Gyasi, and the OIF Representative, Thi Hoang Mai Tran.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister of Education Rev. John Ntim Fordjour reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting the teaching and learning of French as part of efforts to position Ghana within the Francophone community.

He announced that Ghana would receive 21 French language experts from 11 French-speaking countries before the end of the year. The teachers will support the training of local French teachers and help strengthen French language instruction over the next three years.

The experts will be deployed to six Colleges of Education responsible for training future French teachers, Regional Centres for the Teaching of French (CREF) across the country, and bilingual schools where subjects such as mathematics, science, and ICT are taught in French from the primary level.

The cooperation forms part of Ghana’s broader action plan with the OIF, which focuses on strengthening French education, creating a Francophone environment, promoting the use of French in public administration, and implementing language policy reforms.

French Ambassador to Ghana, Anne Sophie, said Ghana’s strategic position in West Africa makes proficiency in French an important tool for regional integration and socio-economic development.
