Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has called on the government to declare a period of national mourning to honour victims of the devastating June 29 floods.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, July 14, Afenyo-Markin said the scale of the disaster, which claimed lives and destroyed homes and businesses, required a formal national response.

“Many poor people lost their properties. Many poor people lost their businesses. We need the government to rise to the occasion and address the nation on this matter,” he said.
He also criticised the absence of an official commemoration for those who died in the floods.
“People have died. It’s important that official statements be made to commemorate them and address the situation,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin noted that previous national disasters had been marked with periods of national mourning announced by the President, and urged the government to take similar action following the June 29 floods.
