President Mahama commissions new cardiac laboratory at Korle Bu

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, restoring critical cardiac services and expanding Ghana’s capacity to provide specialised heart care.

The facility, developed under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, replaces the laboratory destroyed by fire in March 2025 and is equipped with advanced technology for diagnosing and treating complex cardiovascular conditions.

President Mahama said the project reflects the government’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare through the Free Primary Healthcare Programme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. He stressed that no Ghanaian should be denied life-saving treatment because of financial constraints and announced plans to establish similar specialised cardiac centres in the middle and northern parts of the country.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the new facility will improve early diagnosis, timely treatment and continuity of care while supporting the training of specialists. He added that the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to sustaining healthcare investments through proper maintenance and innovative management systems.

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, described the laboratory as a symbol of resilience and national commitment to saving lives. She said the Fund remains focused on financing specialised treatment, expanding healthcare infrastructure and supporting research to address the growing burden of chronic diseases.

Government has described the project as a major investment in strengthening Ghana’s capacity to deliver timely and life-saving cardiac care.
