The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old suspect, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of a student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
According to a statement issued by the Police, the suspect was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following sustained intelligence-led operations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at approximately 6:48 p.m., the suspect, who claims to be a teacher by profession and also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave.
Police investigations further revealed that the suspect allegedly transported the victim to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her death.
The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and ensure justice for the deceased and her family.
The Police have indicated that investigations are still ongoing and assured the public that further updates will be communicated as the case progresses.
The incident has generated widespread concern among students and members of the public, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work while the suspect remains in custody, assisting with investigations.
