Police launch manhunt after deadly highway robbery in Ashanti Region

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked passengers along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on April 12, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., when six armed men, three carrying pump-action guns, attacked a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20.

The bus, carrying about 30 football players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum, veered off the road into a bush while attempting to escape.

During the attack, a footballer, Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot injuries and later died at the Bibiani Government Hospital. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GH¢4,500.00.

Police retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene to support investigations.

The Command has deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts and is pursuing the suspects, assuring the public that those responsible will be arrested. Residents have been urged to remain calm as investigations continue.
