Mahama announces 60-hectare irrigated tomato farms with processing plan

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish 60 hectares of irrigated farmland to support year-round tomato production, alongside processing initiatives to prevent glut and ensure adequate supply on the Ghanaian market.

He said it is not enough to grow tomatoes without building processing capacity to avoid post-harvest losses, making the remarks at the Kwahu Business Forum held at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region on Saturday, April 4, 2026.

At the forum, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, highlighted the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat in advancing Ghana’s industrialisation and trade agenda.

She said Ghana’s position as host of the Secretariat places a responsibility on the country to translate continental trade policies into practical business opportunities and demonstrate the impact of intra-African trade.

The Minister noted that government is working to ensure Ghanaian enterprises have access to rules of origin certification, tariff intelligence and market linkages to compete within the African market.

She stressed that policy measures alone would not be sufficient without strong private sector participation.

She added that the forum’s theme, “The Future of Business: Scaling up Local Enterprise,” reflects Ghana’s current stage of industrial development and demonstrates the capacity of local entrepreneurs across processing, manufacturing, services and trade.

The Minister also said the Ministry is advancing the revitalisation of special economic zones, repositioning them as active industrial ecosystems focused on agro-processing and light manufacturing.

The 2026 Kwahu Business Forum also featured exhibition tours and panel discussions on key economic sectors.
