The Ghana Police Service has arrested eight suspected highway robbers following a targeted intelligence-led operation in the Ashanti North Region.

The incident involved six armed men who attacked a commercial driver transporting 14 passengers from Kumasi to Atebubu, robbing them of cash and mobile phones.

Police say swift intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts led officers to Amakwa Dadey Hotel at Ejura on March 30, where the suspects were allegedly found sharing money believed to be proceeds from the robbery.

During the operation, eight individuals were arrested. However, one of the suspects, identified as Ibrahim Iddrisu, also known as “Bule,” who was reportedly on the police wanted list for previous robbery cases, attempted to flee. Police say he attacked an officer with a cutlass and tried to seize a service weapon during pursuit.

In response, officers discharged a firearm, injuring the suspect. He was rushed to the Mampong Government Hospital and later referred to the Jamasi Pope John Paul Hospital, where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Police retrieved several items during the operation, including two live AK-47 rounds, three cutlasses, a cash amount of GH¢15,717, eight mobile phones, and other personal effects believed to be linked to the robbery.

The remaining suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and further action.

Authorities say the operation is ongoing, with efforts underway to track down additional suspects and recover more weapons.

The police have reiterated their commitment to tackling highway robbery and ensuring the safety of road users, urging the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing relevant information.
