SIM registration aims to build reliable national database – NCA boss

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has reiterated that the ongoing SIM card registration exercise is ultimately aimed at creating a credible and reliable national database to support security, governance, and digital development.

According to the NCA’s leadership, the exercise goes beyond regulatory compliance and is designed to establish a trusted system that can be relied upon for accurate identification of mobile network users across the country.

The Authority explained that a dependable database is critical in tackling issues such as fraud, cybercrime, and anonymous communications, which have become increasing concerns in Ghana’s telecommunications space.

By linking SIM cards to verified identities, authorities believe it will enhance accountability and improve national security.

The NCA further noted that the initiative will support broader digital transformation efforts by enabling better coordination among state institutions, improving service delivery, and strengthening data-driven decision-making.

While acknowledging concerns raised by sections of the public regarding the registration process, the Authority emphasized that efforts are being made to ensure the system is secure, efficient, and accessible to all users.

The NCA also urged citizens who are yet to complete their SIM registration to do so promptly to avoid disruptions in mobile services, stressing that widespread compliance is essential to achieving the programme’s objectives.

Industry analysts say that although the success of the initiative depends largely on data integrity and public trust, a well-managed SIM registration system could significantly improve Ghana’s digital and security infrastructure in the long term.
