Opoku-Agyemang visits Roads Ministry to review infrastructure development

Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has paid an official working visit to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to review the state of the country’s road infrastructure and strengthen coordination between the Presidency and the Ministry.

During the visit, she was received by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, along with the Ministry’s leadership. Discussions focused on assessing ongoing projects, addressing challenges within the sector, and aligning infrastructure development with government priorities.

Officials from the Ministry presented an overview of Ghana’s road network, which currently spans about 137,000 kilometres. They also highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding and upgrading roads nationwide under the “Big Push” infrastructure agenda.

Among the key projects discussed was the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, expected to improve connectivity between two of the country’s most important economic corridors and support increased trade and mobility.

The meeting also addressed plans to strengthen road maintenance and improve the protection of road infrastructure through stricter axle-load enforcement. In addition, the Ministry outlined preparations to introduce technology-driven tolling systems following Cabinet approval to reintroduce road tolls.

However, officials acknowledged several challenges affecting the sector, including high levels of debt, financial constraints, project delays, limited staff capacity, vandalism of road infrastructure, and right-of-way issues that slow project execution.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that road infrastructure remains critical to national development and economic growth. She commended the Ministry for its efforts while calling for patience from the public as government works to address the sector’s difficulties.

She also urged Ghanaian contractors to contribute actively by delivering high-quality projects and supporting government’s broader infrastructure goals under the Big Push initiative.

The engagement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure across the country while ensuring safety, accountability, and long-term sustainability in the sector.
