President Mahama arrives in Arusha to address African Court at opening of judicial year

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Arusha, Tanzania, ahead of the opening of the Judicial Year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

As Special Guest of Honour, President Mahama is expected to become the first Ghanaian President to address the continental court.

The ceremony will also mark the launch of the court’s 20th anniversary on the theme “20 Years of Service in Protecting Human and Peoples’ Rights in Africa.”

He was received at Kilimanjaro International Airport by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kom, and other officials. They included Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, with additional responsibility to Tanzania, H.E. Paul Evans Aidoo, and Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, a Supreme Court judge and judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

According to his schedule, President Mahama will hold a meeting with the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, on Monday morning before proceedings at the Court.

His keynote address is set for 9:15 a.m. Ghana time.

The President is accompanied by Legal Counsel Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew and Presidential Advisor and Special Aide Joyce Bawah Mogtari.
