Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Board Chairman resigns
Mr. David Adomako

The Board Chairman of the Oil Refinery (TOR), Mr. David Adomako, has tendered his resignation, citing recent developments in the refinery as the reason for his departure. In a letter dated 24th January 2024 addressed to the Presidency and copied to the Minister for Energy, Mr Adomako expressed his decision to step down from his position.

His resignation stems from the withdrawal of the proposed partnership between TOR and Energy and Processing Limited, a move the Board believed to be crucial for revitalizing the ailing refinery. Mr. Adomako explained that without the envisioned partnership, he lacked the necessary time and energy to pursue alternative solutions for TOR's rehabilitation, especially considering the challenging task ahead with uncertain outcomes.

He expressed concerns about the lack of harmony among staff, management, the board, and other stakeholders, which he deemed essential for successful restructuring efforts. In light of the absence of government financial support and difficulties in attracting significant private sector investment, the Board instructed management to explore a wider range of strategic options for TOR's future while continuing efforts to secure investors for the refinery's rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, tensions have escalated between a faction of TOR workers and management over transparency issues related to the strategic partnership with Tema Energy and Processing Limited. The General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU), representing the workers, accused management and the Board of lacking transparency in the process.

The situation led to the interdiction of two executives of GTPCWU by the TOR Board, further exacerbating the conflict. In response, the (NLC) intervened, requesting TOR's Acting Managing Director to address the complaints raised by the union executives before the designated deadline, amidst threats of picketing by the union.
